On Tuesday, 5th February 2002, Marti played at the Royal Albert Hall, London in aid of The Teenage Cancer Trust.
There was a week of shows by artists such as Paul Weller, Robert Plant and Jimmy Paige amongst others. Marti's show was the opener in a fantastic week of fund raising!
When we first heard about this show, we didn't really know what to expect but Marti would be there, so that was enough! We had no idea of the treat that we were in for!!
The show started with an introduction by Roger Daltrey then Belinda Carlisle performed four songs - Live Your Life Be Free, Circles In The Sand, I Get Weak and Heaven Is A Place On Earth. Next on stage was Celestine performing Feeling Good, follow by two songs by the Opera Babes.
Then there was an interval and we still hadn't seen Marti so most of us were assuming that he'd do something similar to Belinda, performing a few of his songs. The next part of the show was amazing!!!!
Marti started with five songs on his own and finished with six on his own but in between he was joined on stage by a host of ladies, singing some songs on their own and some as duets with Marti as follows -
At the end of the show, Marti was joined on stage by some of the teenagers that have been helped by the Teenage Cancer Trust! It was a wonderful show and for such a worthy cause!
Unknown to us, some of the producers of the musical, Chicago, were in the audience that night and were obviously as impressed as the rest of us! They asked Marti if he would be interested in the leading role in Chicago in the West End and he went on to be the most popular Billy Flynn ever!
